Formula for computing earnings per share

Earnings per share can be computed in two ways

1. Earnings per share = Net income after tax / total number of outstanding shares
2. Weighted Earnings per share = (Net income – Dividends on Preferred stock) / Average outstanding shares

Example of earnings per share

EXAMPLE: ABC Co. has a total of net income of $55 million. The paid preferred dividends of the company amounted to $4 million and have $30 million shares paid for the half of the year and $25 million paid for the other half year. Then for calculating earnings per share, first of all weighted average number of shares is to be found. Weighted average share = (30M * 0.5 + 25M * 0.5 = 27.5M. EPS = (55M-4M) / 27.5M = $1.85.
