Purpose of the Module

The purpose of this module is to help students develop and apply specific skills in applied econometric research through an unsupervised, independent computer-based project. This project is an opportunity for students to explore, bring together and apply previously learnt ideas and concepts in depth.

The module also develops the general transferable skills of report writing and oral presentation and provides experience in quantitative analysis for those students who wish to pursue careers in economic and business research, macroeconomic advising, financial economics, forecasting and econometric analysis.

Students will undertake an independent investigation on a specialist topic of their own choice to develop skills in data collection and in presentation of information; to enhance report-writing skills through the preparation of a coherent, extended piece of analysis; to prepare and deliver an oral presentation of the project proposal; to apply econometrics techniques to estimate a model, interpret the results, draw conclusions and make policy recommendations, where appropriate.

Lectures at the start of the semester are designed to help structure the project and are designed to enable students to choose an appropriate topic and plan the timetable for their work. An opportunity is also provided later in the course for students to discuss their progress with the module leader during a drop-in “question and answer” session.
The responsibility for the whole project rests with the student, not the module leader. The lectures provide general guidance and cover the overall structure of the project, but no specific or specialized advice will be given on any part of individual projects. However, students will be able to register their topic with the module leader and ask specific questions of general interest during the “question and answer” session. The project must be the student’s own work. However, this does not necessarily mean original work. Rather, emphasis is placed on the ability to bring together existing knowledge in an interesting and critical way.

Project Details

Structure of the Project

A template of the project is provided on the module website. You MUST use the template to complete the project. In exceptional cases, where your project structure substantially deviates from the template, you may be permitted to use a different structure, if approved by the module leader.

The project should contain six sections, each of which carries the marks shown in brackets below.

1.The project report should begin with an executive summary, presenting the main features and conclusions of the study in no more than 300 words. You should pay careful attention to the clarity of this summary. [10%]

2 Students must choose an appropriate project topic and an appropriate title. Some examples are listed below. The main focus of the project is to assess your ability to formulate an empirical model to investigate a relevant and well defined economic problem, to use appropriate econometric techniques, to use an econometrics package, and to effectively interpret the results. You should write a clear account of the problems your project is designed to address. [10%]

3. The economic theory behind the model should be clearly identified. In particular, if any additional assumptions are imposed on the theory with the aim of deriving an empirical (estimable) model, they should be clearly stated. [10%]

4 You need to discuss the properties of the data that have been collected for your study, including any problems with the data and any adjustments you have made to the data set. These could include, for instance, conversion of nominal series to ‘real’ values, measurement problems, interpolations, reliability and completeness of data sets, etc. [20%]

5 The main section of the project should be concerned with specifying and estimating the model developed in part 3 above. The model must be developed on the basis of the properties of the data discussed in part 4. In particular, the model specification process must be fully and explicitly explained. Modelling of real life data is always difficult and, therefore, it is important that you look critically at the results and identify drawbacks and shortcomings in the findings. [20%]

6 Following the estimation of your model, you should carefully analyse the results in light of the expected theory predictions. [10%]

7 The project should draw appropriate conclusions and, if relevant, policy recommendations and, in particular, emphasis should be put on the clarity of the conclusions. These conclusions should relate to (i) the model (its drawbacks, advantages, consistency with the economic theory, etc.); and (ii) the economic problem. [20%]
Two appendices should accompany the main text.

The first should contain all relevant computer outputs (estimated parameters, statistics, etc.) and the second should contain all original data used and details of all transformations of the variables, interpolations etc. Shallow and medium replicability should be demonstratedso that a reader of your project could obtain results identical to yours while (i) using the data you supplied (shallow replicability principle) and (ii) retrieving data from the sources you gave and conducting operations on the data as described in your project (medium replicability principle).

Case Approach

Scientific Methodology

We use best scientific approach to solve case study as recommended and designed by best professors and experts in the World. The approach followed by our experts are given below:

Defining Problem

The first step in solving any case study analysis is to define its problem carefully. In order to do this step, our experts read the case two three times so as to define problem carefully and accurately. This step acts as a base and help in building the structure in next steps.

Structure Definition

The second step is to define structure to solve the case. Different cases has different requirements and so as the structure. Our experts understand this and follow student;s university guidelines to come out with best structure so that student will receive best mark for the same.

Research and Analysis

This is the most important step which actually defines the strength of any case analysis. In order to provide best case analysis, our experts not only refer case materials but also outside materials if required to come out with best analysis for the case.

Conclusion & Recommendations

A weak conclusion or recommendations spoil the entire case analysis. Our expert know this and always provide good chunks of volume for this part so that instructors will see the effort put by students in arriving at solution so as to provide best mark.

Length of Project

No more than 30 pages, including relevant figures and tables, but excluding appendices. There is no word limit. The required format is the one in the template (see above). Appendices should contain full sets of original data, full data sources and relevant computer outputs.

Objectives and Design of the Project

The objectives of the project should be clearly stated. At the outset, you need to satisfy yourself that the achievement of these objectives is feasible given the resources you have at your disposal and the time available. These decisions are left up to you and you should take special care when making these decisions as they are key aspects of the research planning process.

Methodology

The methodology used must be stated explicitly and motivation and justifications for methodological choices must be provided. You should adopt a particular set of procedures to analyse the problem you have chosen. Attention should also be given to the appropriateness of your analysis for the topic under investigation and the questions being addressed. You should demonstrate an appreciation of the published literature in your specific topic area, based on a search of the relevant academic journals, official publications, books and other sources of information, which MUST all be fully referenced. This should be a selective search, quoting core articles, journals, monographs, working papers or books in the field.

Critical Observations

It is insufficient to simply carry out the analysis. You must also discuss the results of your analysis in a critical way drawing attention to their limitations. This will require you to think deeply about the connections you want to make, and will involve careful consideration of whether (how and why) your results fall short of answering the question your project sets out to answer, or how it could have been improved in light of your analysis.
Depth of Understanding and Completeness

You should demonstrate a depth of understanding of the theoretical and empirical concepts in the chosen topic area that are appropriate to a final year undergraduate student on your degree programme. You should also discuss whether your analysis of the problem is complete or whether you have left any avenues of enquiry unexplored.

Conclusions

You should summarise the project, assess its contribution to the literature, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of your analysis, discuss the implications of your findings, make policy recommendations, if appropriate, and conclude the project with suggestions for future investigation or research in your chosen area.
