The Final Report and Self Assessment requires the intern to reflect upon the entire internship experience and document his/her impressions of the opportunity, the contributions made to the organization, and the personal and professional changes that occurred (e.g., acquiring new insights, skills, knowledge, etc.). In addition, the Student Intern will use their experience and prior course work to analyze the communication within the organization. Use the following guidelines to complete the report.
Format for the Final Report and Self-Assessment
- Typed, double-spaced
- Title page that includes your name, name of the report (“Final Report and Self Assessment”), the organization, internship supervisor, internship location, and date
Outline for the Final Report and Self Assessment
This report includes two parts: Final Report (Part I) and the Self Assessment (Part II).
PART I: Final Report – Analysis of the Organization’ (Step 1 and 2)
Step 1: Analyze the organization’s structure by briefly answering each of the questions below (1 to 5 sentences). For some of the questions, you may have to ask your Internship Supervisor and/or employee.
Organization and the Outside World
- How is information obtained from outside the organization (customers, vendors, community, etc.)? How often?
- What mechanisms are used to get feedback from customers or clients?
- Survey, questionnaires
- Does the organization gather information from the outside world about other companies related to what they do (competition, industry trends, etc.)?
- Is it shared with your employees?
- How is it shared?
- Does the organization have an open or close system/environment?
- Open – suggestions coming in and out of organization
- Close – very standard – sheltered
Communication Structure
- List and describe the type of channels the organization uses to communicate information to employees (face-to-face, email, bulletin boards, Intranet, etc.).
- Does the organization have an organizational chart? How does “communication flow” pertain to the organizational chart (“chain of command”)?
- Is important organizational information documented (employee manuals, policies and procedures, code of ethics, etc.)?
- What information is documented?
- When are new employees given this information?
- How can employees access this information?
- Is information communicated effectively from management to employees?
- Does the organization have a Mission Statement, Vision Statement, Code of Ethics statement? Where are these statements stored (files, hung on walls, etc.)? How are employees given these statements?
Socializing New Employees and Training
- Does the organization have a set process to allow for socializing new employees?
- Does the organization have an orientation program?
- What is the purpose and format of the program (walk around office, lunch, introductions (informal), discuss policies, etc.)?
- What rules are known up front at the beginning of employment (communication, behavior, technology usage, resolving conflict, regulations, etc.)?
- When and how is training conducted in the organization (for new and current employees)?
Human Relationships
- What does the organization do to build trust with employees?
- How does the organization recognition employees (methods, when)?
- Does the organization celebration employee accomplishments, birthday, special occasions, holidays, etc.?
- Does management solicit employee input, feedback and suggestions?
- Does the organization consider employee involvement in decision-making important?
- How does the organization solicit employee feedback/suggestions (methods)?
- Does the organization have problems/concerns regarding rumors, gossip, cliques?
- Do employees gather together (socializing)?
- Break rooms, lounges, kitchens?
- Is social interaction encouraged?
- Does the organization feel knowing the employees on a personal level is important for the organization?
- How is conflict dealt with among employees?
- How are employees evaluated?
- How are evaluations conducted?
- Face-to-face? Paper form?
- Annual, beginning and end of year?
Step 2: Use your internship experience within the organization and the information you gathered (Step 1) to provide an overall assessment or evaluation of the organization. Write a two to three page assessment of the organization based upon your perspective and experience.
PART II: Self Assessment

- Give examples of how your supervisor provided leadership, which helped you to grow in your professional development.
- List the three most positive benefits you derived from the internship experience.
