Music Appreciation Essay

Music Appreciation Essay

Course Description

As it is virtually impossible to design a course that will cover every facet of human music making, this course specifically covers what is often referred to as “Western Art music,” or “European Art Music,” or “Concert Music,” or sometimes even just “Art Music.” The course will cover musical stylistic periods from the Middle Ages to the present day, with an attempt to understand the various factors that contribute to major stylistic changes. The desired outcome of this course is that students become more active and analytical listeners, and will therefore more deeply appreciate the music of their own personal choice. It is our hope this will allow for a more adventurous attitude towards unfamiliar musical experiences.

The essay portion of the final exam will be a response to one of the following:

1. Discuss the evolution of vocal music from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Pay special attention to texture, i.e. was the vocal music of a particular time predominantly homophonic, polyphonic, or monophonic? What was the music’s relationship to the words? Were they accompanied, and if so by what instrument/s? Also be sure to address the venues where vocal music was performed, in what language, its audience, and where singers received their training for each stylistic period.
