Formula for calculation of return on stock holder equity (ROE)

ROE = Net income / Shareholder’s Equity
Or
ROE = Net income – Preferred dividend / average common stockholder’s equity

Example of return on shareholder’s equity

EXAMPLE: the net income of a company for a fiscal year is $300000 the average stockholder’s equity is $1200000 AND $600000. Then calculate the return on shareholder’s equity of the company.

SOLUTION: Average shareholder’s equity = $1200000+600000 = $ 1800000
Return on equity (ROE) = 300000/ 1800000 = 0.17 or 17%
