Purposes

• To observe firsthand the developing language of a child
• To record and describe the child’s development in phonology, morphology,
semantics, lexicon, syntax, and pragmatics
• To analyze the child’s language development in terms of major concepts and
theories of language development
• To write a report demonstrating understanding of the child’s linguistic behaviour in
terms of major concepts and theories

Observe a child who is acquiring h/er native language. This may be English or any other language. However, if you chose a language other than English, please provide a translation of the video segment. The age of the child should be in the two- to three- year range. Steps:

1. Find a child who is saying word sequences and is making frequent “mistakes” in pronunciation, vocabulary, and structure. Visit child first to make sure that s/he is speaking but is still making mistakes (mispronunciations, leaving out words or parts of words, getting words in wrong order).

2. Get written permission. Once you have identified a child for your project, make sure h/er parent has signed the accompanying permission form. This is absolutely required. If you do not receive permission from the parent of caregiver, you may not tape the child or use the child for the project.

3. Video record 15-20 minutes (minimum, more if you would like) of the child’s speech. This recording may be of (a) the child playing alone (not the best option, as this typically results in little language use and does not provide a clear picture of how the child uses language to communicate and interact with others); (b) the child playing with another child (in which case, you will need the permission of the second child’s parent or caregiver, see attached form); (c) the child interacting with h/er parent or caregiver; or (d) the child interacting with you, the researcher.

Try to get spontaneous speech that shows what the child is capable of, for example, playing with another child, talking with a friendly, relaxed adult (topics to try: family, friends, pets, food), playing with a favourite toy, naming objects in a picture-book, talking about a favorite book (it’s great if the child will “read” to you), role-playing with dolls, whatever works. Parents can be valuable allies. If the child is shy with strangers, explain to the mother that you would like to hear spontaneous conversation, and record mother-child interaction.

4. Focus on approximately a ten- to fifteen- minute segment (may be more if child does not say much).

5. Study the fifteen-minute segment; analyze the child’s mistakes; write up a report (5 pages minimum, typed and double-spaced). You could discuss data from elsewhere on the tape where relevant, as well as any additional information provided by family members and/or caregivers.

Case Approach

Scientific Methodology

We use best scientific approach to solve case study as recommended and designed by best professors and experts in the World. The approach followed by our experts are given below:

Defining Problem

The first step in solving any case study analysis is to define its problem carefully. In order to do this step, our experts read the case two three times so as to define problem carefully and accurately. This step acts as a base and help in building the structure in next steps.

Structure Definition

The second step is to define structure to solve the case. Different cases has different requirements and so as the structure. Our experts understand this and follow student;s university guidelines to come out with best structure so that student will receive best mark for the same.

Research and Analysis

This is the most important step which actually defines the strength of any case analysis. In order to provide best case analysis, our experts not only refer case materials but also outside materials if required to come out with best analysis for the case.

Conclusion & Recommendations

A weak conclusion or recommendations spoil the entire case analysis. Our expert know this and always provide good chunks of volume for this part so that instructors will see the effort put by students in arriving at solution so as to provide best mark.

Guidelines for Written Report

Your report must include, but is not limited to, discussion of the following
areas/concepts

1. Introduction. Include the child’s first name, age in years and months, date and place of recording, individuals that are present, what is happening, and anything unusual about the child or situation. What language(s) is the child exposed to? What language(s) does the child speak? If you can find out, include the age at which the child acquired a speaking repertoire of 10 words, and the age at which the child started to put words together.

2. Discussion

a. Phonology: Study the child’s “mistakes” in pronunciation. The easiest way to do this is through a chart like the one you see below. Make sure you put the child’s pronunciation in IPA (international phonetic alphabet) and state what phonological processes were involved. You will have lots of practice with this in class. Comment on and try to explain any patterns
you see, and note any interesting or unusual features. sure to include complete translations. Where an utterance is unintelligible, indicate with dashes or question marks. You do not have to analyze every utterance the child makes; just pick out illustrative examples.

b. Lexicon: Study how well the child did with vocabulary. Some example questions you could address are the following: Did the child make any mistakes with words, such as under extensions or overextensions? Were there any examples of unanalyzed chunks? Did the child know any words that are unusual for a child of h/er age?

c. Morphology: Examine how well the child did with word building (using smaller word parts such as prefixes [e.g., un-] and suffixes [e.g., -ed, -s, – ing]). Which forms were problematic? Why do you think the child did well with these? Which forms were not problematic? Why do you think the child struggled or made an error with those?

d. Syntax: Look at how well the child did with sentence structure. Some example questions you could address include: Did the learner have any problems with word order, verbs, prepositions, articles, etc.? Were there any gross errors?

e. Pragmatics: Is there any evidence that the learner has/has not yet learned some of the pragmatic, discourse, or sociolinguistic rules for conversational interaction? (e.g., appropriate use of speech acts, observance of conversational maxims, turn-taking, appropriate registers,
etc.) You can also give examples of politeness and request strategies that
the child uses appropriately.

f. Theories. The final part of the paper wraps everything up and discusses the theories. Based on what you’ve read, what you’ve heard about and discussed in class, and, crucially, what you’ve observed, which theory of language acquisition (behaviorism, nativism, connectionism) do you think has the best explanation? Note that there is no right answer for this question (but as we will discuss in class, you will need to do a lot of arguing if you want to say the behaviourists have the best explanation). It is also possible to argue for a combination of theories. What I’m interested in here is how you support your argument, not which side you choose.
