A critical appraisal of on Stigma and mental health in the Royal Navy: A mixed methods paper. It is to be done by following the The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) framework. This should include an account of the quality appraisal techniques adopted, critical analysis, reporting of any identified issues regarding validity, reliability, biases and synthesis of findings in the context of published evidence. 1. Critically appraise the design of selected published research evidence (THE ARTICLE ON …..BELOW) in relation to mental health nursing.
2. Critically discuss the ethical issues raised by the conduct of research within mental health nursing.
3. Critically appraise the notion of rigour as related to selected research within mental health nursing, with emphasis on concepts including validity, reliability and its application to practice.
4. Critically appraise the appropriateness of approaches to data analysis in relation to research within mental health nursing.

The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) framework, Making sense of evidence about clinical effectiveness, acts as a guide to critiquing the assessment article.
Remember to use a questioning approach to this assignment.
 

You must read the article (ATTACHED TO THE EMAIL – Stigma and mental health in the Royal Navy: A mixed methods paper) and question each area in detail and answer the questions raised. This is your analysis which you will then support with evidence (References) from the research texts.
As a guidance, when writing your assignment approximate equal weighting should be given to addressing each of the ten points.

CASP (FOLLOW THIS)
 

Is there a clear statement of the aims of the research? Consider
 

• What is the goal and aims of the research?
• Are the aims clearly stated?
• How do the aims of the research link to the literature review?
• Are research questions stated at the beginning and addressed throughout the study?
 

Is a mixed-methods, qualitative and quantitative methodology appropriate? Consider:
• Is the reason for using a mixed-methods approach explicit?
• How does a mixed-methods approach add value to a single methodology?
 

Is the research design appropriate to address the aims of the study?
 

• Has the researcher justified the design for each element of the study ie. Qualitative and quantitative?
• Is the design appropriate in addressing the aim of the research, for example survey design?
• Is the timing and weighting of both elements observed? Is data collected sequentially or concurrently? Is one aspect of the study given more emphasis, for example the qualitative element or are they equal?
Is the sampling and recruitment strategy appropriate to the research aims?
 

• Has the researcher explained how participants were selected? Are inclusion and exclusion criteria clear? Is the sampling method identified? Is the sample size appropriate?
 

• Have they explained why the participants they selected were appropriate to provide the type of knowledge required?
 

Is the data collected in a way that addresses the research issues?
 

• Is it clear how data was collected for each element? How was qualitative data collected? How was quantitative data collected? Has the research justified the chosen method? Are data collection methods appropriate? Are the data collection methods detailed and explicit?
 

Is the relationship between researcher and participants adequately considered?
 
• Has the researcher critically examined their own role, bias and influence during formulation of research questions, recruitment and data collection? This may be specifically relevant within the qualitative data collection phase.
 
Have ethical issues been taken into consideration?
 
• Did the researchers state that they had obtained ethical approval and how was this process carried out?
 
• Has the researcher discussed issues raised by the study i.e. confidentiality, consent and the effects of the study on participants? Are any specific ethical issues identified?
 
Was data analysis sufficiently rigorous?
 
• Is there in-depth description of the analysis process?
 
• If thematic analysis is used is it clear how categories and themes were derived from the data?
 
• Is all of the collected data presented in the findings? If not do the researchers state why not?
 
• Did the researcher examine their own role in potential bias and influence during data analysis? Again, this may be particularly relevant in qualitative data analysis.
 
Is there a clear statement of findings?
 
• Are the findings explicit?
 
• Is there adequate discussion of findings?
 
• Has the researcher addressed issues of reliability, validity and credibility?
 
• Are findings discussed in relation to the original research questions?
 
How valuable is the research?
 
• Has the researcher discussed the contribution that the study makes to existing knowledge, practice or policy?
 
• Does the study identify new areas where research is necessary?
 
• Has the researcher discussed whether findings can be transferred to other populations? This may be relevant to the quantitative aspect of the study.
 
The assignment should be structured as follows
 
-Introduction: To include the rationale for choice of article and critiquing tool.
-Body of assignment: Critique of article structured utilising your chosen framework.
-Conclusion: Including limitations of the study and implications for clinical practice. The usefulness of your chosen critiquing tool.
