The SBAR should provide information for the executive to understand the need for the new employee, the cost (assume $30/hour + 25% fringe benefits) for 1.0 FTE for a year, and the duties to be performed.
You may write the SBAR on a different topic than the salary one presented above; however, the topic must be financed focused with dollar calculations. For example, if you want to perform a new service, then you must discuss the financial implications of this on the organization and not just that the service is really needed.
Part of the role of a leader is explaining situations as described above and often this is done without interacting with senior management, so you are left with your communication skills. Assume the executive does not know what you do. Use the SBAR format (as found on the Assignments section of Blackboard) to provide the rationale why this FTE is necessary. You should justify the $30 an hour dollar amount you are going to pay your respective new employee.
The SBAR must be concise and focus on the key elements and not filled with “fluff”. It is acceptable to use I, but “our” and “we” would be better terms. The Situation and Recommendation should be short and to the point. You may use bullets in each section. The document should be kept to a maximum of 3 pages, but 2 is better.
This is a creative assignment with no research necessary and you are free to write about any scenario real or hypothetical. There are no wrong answers per se, but you will be graded on your grammar and ability to deliver the message in a manner worthy of your job title. I want the quality to be good enough to take to your boss tomorrow.
Situation. This should be one and no more than 2 bullets. “The Finance Department must hire a new financial analyst to replace Kurt Sargent, as he was promoted to Finance Manager.”
Background: This can use bullets (no more than 5) or paragraphs to explain the history of the situation. This is also a place to start to justify why we have this Situation. “The financial analyst plays a key role in the department by doing the analysis for the business unit, which includes variance analysis, interacting with department staff, and conducting analysis on new business ventures.” Keep them short, but you have to lay the groundwork to make the reader understand why the “position” in this case is important.
Analysis: (bullets are acceptable again 5 max) This is where you have to evaluate the pros and cons of the situation without saying pros and cons. You can give different scenarios in this section too, which helps the executive believe you thought of everything and they should not question why you are making the recommendation. “The financial analyst plays a key role in the department by bringing financial expertise to the departments, which are often led by non-financial managers.” “If the position is not funded the current staff will not be able to meet the departments needs in a timely manner, which can result in the department overspending its funds.”
Recommendation: In many cases, you want to state 1 recommendation; however, if there are several different options “should we rebill Medicare” “make the change and fix it going forward”. We recommend hiring a financial analyst to fill the role vacated by Kurt Sargent.” Your sales job is in the previous sections, now you are telling the executive we need this and the previous sections set the stage.
